About this artwork

Pieter Bruegel The Elder was a major figure in the Dutch Renaissance art movement. His unique portrayals of landscapes and simple scenes featuring rural folk marked a major shift away from the religious themes that were prevalent in early European art. One of his famous pieces, 'Hunters in the Snow,' belongs to a collection of his artwork representing various months of the year. This particular painting captures a chilly winter landscape where three hunters are returning from a fruitless hunting trip, gazing down at the valley beneath them.
