About this artwork
The print we're talking about here is excellent. It's created based on a watercolour painting of a Tulipa, specifically the 'La Christophine', by an artist named August Wilhelm Sievert. This piece comes from a collection of watercolours and sketches called 'Hortus florum imaginum', which dates back around 1730. Sievert was pretty active during the 1720s to 1740s, and he even got a chance to work as a botanical artist and the Inspector of gardens for Karl Wilhelm, Markgraf von Baden-Durlach in Germany from 1727. Interestingly, in the same portfolio, there are eleven other drawings that were later reproduced in the 1760s to 80s as hand-coloured engravings for C J Trew's book 'Hortus Nitidissimus'.
