About this artwork
This excellent print originates from a watercolour painting of a Tulipa identified as 'von Aerench', credited to the artist August Wilhelm Sievert. The painting is part of a collection of watercolours and drawings named 'Hortus florum imaginum', which dates back to around 1730. Sievert was an active artist in the years 1720-1740 and from 1727, he held the dual role of botanical artist and Inspector of gardens for Karl Wilhelm, the Margrave of Baden-Durlach in Germany. Notably, eleven drawings from this collection were later reproduced around 1760-80 as hand-coloured engravings in C J Trew's book 'Hortus Nitidissimus'.
