About this artwork
"Common Lady's Mantle" (Alchemilla Vulgaris), a nature printed piece by Bradbury and Evans, London, 1854Henry Bradbury, born in 1829 and died in 1860, first delved into nature printing with a collection of 21 plates called "A few leaves from the newly-invented process of 'Nature Printing'". This was published by Bradbury and Evans back in 1854. Bradbury picked up this fresh technique under the wing of Alois Auer, a Viennese printer born in 1813 and died in 1869. This technique was patented in the UK by William, Henry's father. Just like photography and other image technologies that emerged in the mid-19th century, the idea was to capture the natural world in a more immediate way. The creation process involved putting a herbarium sample between two metal sheets. This would make an imprint on the softer sheet, which would then be treated to form the printing plate.
