About this artwork

This excellent print is a reproduction of a hand-coloured lithograph named Wall Flower. The original lithograph was created by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850), who was inspired by the artwork of Valentine Bartholomew (1799-1879). The print comes from Bartholomew's 'A Selection of Flowers Adapted Principally for Students', a book published in London by R. Ackermann between 1821 and 1822.Bartholomew's work includes 36 hand-coloured lithographs and marks one of the initial uses of lithography in botanical illustration. This particular print is from Plate [2]. It's a fantastic piece that beautifully showcases the early application of lithography in the world of botany.

About the artist

Charles Joseph Hullmandel was a British lithographer, artist, and scientist. He was born in 1789 in London and was the son of a German-born engraver. Hullmandel was a pioneer in the development of lithography, a printing technique that uses a greasy substance to transfer an image onto a stone or metal plate. He was also a prolific artist, producing a variety of prints and drawings. He was a founding member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Hullmandel died in 1850.
