About the artist

Prominent German traveler, botanist, and physician Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (17 February 1796 – 18 October 1866) introduced Western medicine in Japan and extensively studied its fauna and flora. His focus on Japanese flora and fauna led him to collect a vast amount of material, amassing over 1,000 native plants. To adapt the Japanese plants to the Dutch climate, he cultivated them in a specially constructed glasshouse. Japanese artists such as Kawahara Keiga depicted these plants, creating botanical illustrations and showcasing everyday life in Japan.
