About this artwork

This top-grade print originates from a chromolithographic sketch called Maranta Veitchii, created by François Frédéric Grobon (1815-1901/1902) for Auguste Bry out of Paris, following an original piece by Auguste Faguet (fl.1864-1900). It's part of Les Promenades de Paris, authored by Jean Charles Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891), and was published in Paris sometime between 1867 and 1873. The collection includes depictions of various facets of the French capital, featuring scenes from historic Parisian gardens and pictures of some plants grown within these gardens. [Plate 39].

About the artist

Francois Frédéric Grobon, originally from Lyon, was born there and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under the guidance of Claude Bonnefond between 1831 and 1836. He then went on to further his studies in Paris, under Victor Orsel.

His artistic journey began in earnest in 1842 when he started showcasing his work at the Paris Salon. During the mid-19th century, Grobon delved into various art forms like lithographs and porcelain painting.

However, as a painter, his creations mostly revolved around religious and historical imagery, landscapes, and portraits. He also had a talent for painting still lifes of flowers and fruits.
