About this artwork

The 'Your Britain - Fight for it Now (Salisbury)' belongs to a set of posters designed by British artist, Frank Newbould. This poster is a great exhibit of how a style of travel poster, common between the wars, was still popular during the war era. It was used to stir up nationalistic emotions towards an idealised image of Britain, perfectly encapsulated by the trees that outline the view of Salisbury Cathedral. This reprinted version stays true to the original's colour palette and has received the green light from the Imperial War Museum. Every sale contributes towards the museum's ongoing work.

UK - £6.90 for unframed items by Royal Mail Special Delivery

About the artist

Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1887, Frank Newbould is best remembered for his vibrant and colourful travel posters. He refined his craft at a local art school, and quickly became a prominent poster designer in the 1920s. He was known for his unique style that combined the simplicity of poster design with elements of Post Impressionist art. Despite focusing on essential elements, Newbould's work always maintained aspects of the landscape or location. He died in London on December 24, 1951.

Newbould also studied at Bradford College of Art and made a name for himself as a black-and-white illustrator and poster artist. His notable palette of bright, flat colours set his work apart. During the World Wars, he designed numerous posters, including many for London and North Eastern Railways (LNER), London Transport, and the Orient Line. He was also known for his wartime recruitment poster for the Auxiliary Fire Service. In 1942, Newbould joined the War Office as Abram Games' assistant and produced the famous 'Your Britain, Fight for It Now' series among eleven other posters.
