About this artwork

This excellent print is derived from a hand-painted engraved sheet named 'Ixia aristata' by Henry Andrews, pulled from 'The Botanist's Repository, for New, and Rare Plants', which Andrews published between 1797-1812. Andrews was a botanical artist and engraver from Knightsbridge, London. He is also known for his published pieces on Heaths and Geraniums. Andrews was the son-in-law of John Kennedy (1759-1842), a partner at the Vineyard Nursery in Hammersmith, who provided plants to Empress Josephine.

About the artist

English botanist and plant illustrator, Henry Cranke Andrews (fl. 1794 - 1830), typically published under the name Henry C. Andrews. He resided in Knightsbridge and was married to the daughter of John Kennedy, a nurseryman from Hammersmith, who assisted him in writing descriptions for the plants he illustrated.

Andrews was known for his unique botanical artwork. Unlike his peers who were hired simply to create small drawings, Andrews wore many hats - artist, engraver, colourist, and publisher. His first publication, 'The Botanist's Repository', was published in London across ten volumes from 1797 to 1812, providing reasonably-priced plant images for Britain's burgeoning community of hobby gardeners.

His work was praised for its accuracy by the Kew publication, Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Interestingly, Andrews' images had a more artistic appeal compared to his competitors whose work was more scientifically inclined.
