About this artwork

Jack Vettriano is a well known, self-taught painter from Scotland, who holds a significant position in the British modern art world. One of his most well-known works is 'The Billy Boys', which portrays four men in suits, strolling on a beach at sunset. The inspiration for this iconic piece was drawn from a poster for Quentin Tarantino's 1992 iconic American crime film, 'Reservoir Dogs'. Interestingly, the painting's title, 'Billy Boys', is rooted in Vettriano's Scottish heritage. It's a famed loyalist song from Glasgow that dates back to the 1920s and is frequently linked with the enduring religious tension between Protestants and Catholics in the city.

About the artist

Jack Vettriano , born Jack Hoggan on 17 November 1951 in Methil, Fife, Scotland, is a self-taught painter and printmaker. His work is often associated with the "Lowland School" of painting, a style of figurative painting that emerged in the 1980s. His work is heavily influenced by the film noir genre, and his paintings often feature solitary figures in dark, moody settings. Vettriano has had a successful career, with his work being exhibited in galleries around the world.
