About this artwork

This premium-grade print originates from a watercolour on vellum by James Bolton. Bolton, a native of West Yorkshire, England, was the offspring of a weaver. He was a self-educated botanist, artist, and engraver. His brother, Thomas Bolton (1722-1778), was a naturalist too. James Bolton gained significant success as a mycologist and authored several botanical books, including the first British publication on fungi. Both James and Thomas Bolton were financially backed by Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (1715-1785), a collector of art and natural history. This painting was created around the 1790s.

About the artist

James Bolton, an English botanist, nature illustrator, and mycologist, was born in 1735, somewhere near Warley in West Riding of Yorkshire. His birth location isn't confirmed but it's likely a farm in Calderdale, Yorkshire. William Bolton, a weaver, was his father and Thomas Bolton, his elder brother and a skilled naturalist, died in 1778.

Bolton had no formal training but was a gifted naturalist, authoring and illustrating books on diverse subjects like ferns, flowers, and birds. Besides being an art instructor, he also ran a pub in his hometown, Warley.

In 1785, Bolton created the illustrations for Richard Relhan's Flora Cantabrigiensis and published his first work, Filices Britannicae. It was a beautifully illustrated two-volume study of British ferns. Bolton not only sketched but also etched the illustrations himself, and his work comprised unique research and fieldwork.

Between 1788 and 1791, he produced An History of Fungusses growing about Halifax, a four-volume work covering 231 fungus species. It was the first British book on fungi and it stood out for Bolton's remarkable colour visuals.

He died in Warley, West Riding of Yorkshire, in 1799.
