About this artwork

This superior quality print originates from a hand-tinted engraved page in Johannes Gessner's tome 'Tabulae Phytographicae'. As a botanist, geologist, and esteemed colleague of Linnaeus, Gessner was one of the pioneer botanists to embrace the Linnean system of classification. Unfortunately, Gessner died before he could finish 'Tabulae Phytographicae', and the book was published posthumously. It dates back to 1795.

About the artist

Born in 1709 and breathing his last in 1790, Johannes Gessner was a well known botanist and geologist. He was, notably, one of the earliest adopters of the Linnean taxonomy system, and a well-respected correspondent of Carl Linnaeus himself, the esteemed Swedish botanist, taxonomist, zoologist, and physician known to many as the "father of modern taxonomy".

Gessner’s work, 'Tabulae Phytographicae', published posthumously between 1795 and 1804, was unique in focusing predominantly on fruits and flowers, with little regard for other plant parts. Throughout the 1740s, Gessner and Linnaeus would exchange not just ideas, but also plant specimens.

Gessner was working on a beautifully illustrated work, intending to provide detailed comparisons of different plant families. The first two plates of this work, sent to Linnaeus in 1763, left him "thunderstruck". Unfortunately, Gessner’s death meant Linnaeus never saw the finished product. It was not until 1795 that Christoph Salomon Schinz initiated the publication of Gessner’s manuscript, a process that continued until at least 1811. The final plates, interestingly, lacked accompanying text.
