About this artwork
John Gay, originally named Hans Gohler, was a German photographer who moved to Yorkshire, England and made a name for himself in professional photography. He often specialised in capturing the faces of famous literary figures. Among his extensive collection, there's an iconic image of Dylan Thomas, a poet known for his work with the BBC as a regular broadcaster and scriptwriter. Whenever you buy anything, it aids the operations of the National Portrait Gallery.
