About this artwork

John P.W. Furse, a Rear-Admiral who retired from the Royal Navy in 1959, is the artist behind this high-quality print. He used watercolors to beautifully capture Erythronium revolutum 'Rose Beauty'. After his Navy career, Furse made several journeys to places like Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Russia, and Afghanistan, where he collected a variety of bulbs, many of which were eventually brought back to RHS Wisley.He wasn't just a traveler and an artist. Furse also served as the Vice-Chairman of the RHS Lily group and was recognised for his contributions in 1965 when he was awarded with the Victoria Medal of Honour. A true multifaceted individual, Furse left an undeniable mark in multiple fields.

About the artist

John Paul Wellington Furse CB, OBE, VMH (13 October 1904 – 8 October 1978) was not only a distinguished Rear-Admiral in the English Navy but also a painter and botanical illustrator. After retiring from his service, he and his wife embarked on plant hunting adventures for the Royal Horticultural Society.

Their explorations were featured in the Royal Horticultural Society's journal. Furthermore, Furse's meticulous field notes, his vibrant botanical paintings, personal letters and a collection of over 700 illustrations are well-preserved at Kew.
