About this artwork
John P.W. Furse, a Rear-Admiral who retired from the Royal Navy in 1959, is the artist behind this excellent print. It's based on a watercolour painting he did of a certain type of tulip. Furse had a talent for travel, having made numerous trips to places like Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Russia, and Afghanistan. On those journeys, he'd often collect bulbs, many of which he transported back to RHS Wisley. In addition to being a world traveller, he was also the Vice-Chairman of the RHS Lily group. His contributions didn't go unnoticed, as he was awarded the prestigious Victoria Medal of Honour in 1965.
