About this artwork

'You might think electricity and magnetism are completely different forces. That's what early scientists believed too. But then in 1820, Hans Christian Øersted did an experiment with an electric current and a compass. Surprise, surprise, the compass needle started to shake. It turns out, a magnetic field was spinning around the electric current, preventing the compass from aligning to the earth's magnetic poles. This was a game-changer, especially for people like Øersted and his pals who were still using candles and gas lamps. The fact that you could use electricity to generate a magnetic field implied that magnetic fields could, in return, sustain electric currents. This meant that the nightlife could finally kick off.But the importance of electromagnetism doesn't stop with keeping the lights on. It also plays a crucial role in atomic interaction, attracting atoms to each other to form molecules as they share or transfer electrons. In doing so, electromagnetism essentially holds our world together.' - Justin Van Genderen

About the artist

Raised in northern New Jersey, Justin Van Genderen furthered his education at a small liberal arts college in western Michigan. He then relocated to Chicago, where he now operates his freelance design studio, 2046 Design. His designs are an extension of his values, a reflection of his quest for truth, wonder, and objectivity. Fascinated by the complexity of reality, his perception was shaped by the scientific method.

Justin's Space Race poster series was inspired by raw, vintage images of NASA astronauts from Life Magazine. His intrigue grew, leading him to explore scientific documentaries, theoretical physics, and the early days of space exploration. With a background in graphic design, Justin has spent 15 years harnessing his skills.

As a child, he drew inspiration from movies and comics, encouraged by supportive parents who propelled him toward a career in art and design.
