'You might think electricity and magnetism are completely different forces. That's what early scientists believed too. But then in 1820, Hans Christian Øersted did an experiment with an electric current and a compass. Surprise, surprise, the compass needle started to shake. It turns out, a magnetic field was spinning around the electric current, preventing the compass from aligning to the earth's magnetic poles.This was a game-changer, especially for people like Øersted and his pals who were still using candles and gas lamps. The fact that you could use electricity to generate a magnetic field implied that magnetic fields could, in return, sustain electric currents. This meant that the nightlife could finally kick off.But the importance of electromagnetism doesn't stop with keeping the lights on. It also plays a crucial role in atomic interaction, attracting atoms to each other to form molecules as they share or transfer electrons.
