So you know that basic force of nature you experience every time you knock over a glass of water or make a clumsy somersault? Yeah, that's the same force that makes sure planets stick to their orbits.The reason things fall is because our planet is giving them a good old tug towards itself. This force called gravity draws objects towards things with a lot of mass. A classic example is how a ginormous, heavy object like the sun manages to keep our earth spinning around it. The Moon too, despite being much smaller, has enough clout to stir things up – its gravitational pull causes the rise and fall of our ocean tides.Gravity might feel like the big boss when you're scrambling to catch a falling flower pot, but believe it or not, it's actually the weakest kid on the block when it comes to the four basic forces. Other forces, like electromagnetism, totally overshadow it. So if you're usually quite the acrobat and your somersaults are on point, that's because other forces are counteracting gravity's pull.
