Imagine being able to time travel to witness the birth of galaxies. That's the goal of the James Webb Space Telescope, a joint venture between NASA, the European and Canadian space agencies. Once it's done, it'll be like a time machine, giving us a glimpse of the past.You see, light doesn't reach us instantly. We see stars as they were in the past, not as they are now. From our spot on earth, we see the sun as it was eight minutes ago and the next nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, as it was over four years ago. Astronomers reckon if we could observe light from the earliest stars and galaxies, we'd effectively be looking back 13.6 billion years. But there's a snag. By the time that light reaches us, it shifts into red wavelengths that we can't see with our own eyes. That's where the Webb telescope comes in. It's set to venture further out of Earth's orbit than any previous telescope and is designed to see the universe in infrared wavelengths. -James van Genderen
