About this artwork

As I started creating my collection of science, physics, and space posters, I wanted to present an aesthetically pleasing and easily comprehensible take on such vast subjects and theories. It was about celebrating the science that brought them to life. My creations continue to venture into the cosmos, delve into the quantum domain, and explore new and fascinating scientific theories that pertain to our world. I anticipate future discoveries and am excited about the prospect of learning and unraveling them through my work.
Justin Van Genderen

Voyager 1 and 2 began their journey from Cape Canaveral in 1977 with a designed lifespan of five years. Their main missions: to observe Jupiter and Saturn. They delivered images of active volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io, and a closer look at Saturn revealed that its rings comprise thousands of tiny bands. Four decades on, these robust spacecraft are still cruising, upgraded remotely. Voyager 1 is currently 13 billion miles from Earth, with Voyager 2 not far behind...
Throughout this journey, the Voyager spacecraft have been ferrying valuable cargo. Both carry a copy of the Golden Record, a gold-plated copper phonograph recording designed by Carl Sagan and his team to narrate the story of life on Earth. If aliens were to listen to the Golden Record, they would hear sounds from Earth's natural world, like whale sounds, thunder, surf, and greetings in 55 languages. Carl Sagan compared the Voyager missions to a seafarer dispatching a “bottle into the cosmic ocean.”

About the artist

Raised in northern New Jersey, Justin Van Genderen furthered his education at a small liberal arts college in western Michigan. He then relocated to Chicago, where he now operates his freelance design studio, 2046 Design. His designs are an extension of his values, a reflection of his quest for truth, wonder, and objectivity. Fascinated by the complexity of reality, his perception was shaped by the scientific method.

Justin's Space Race poster series was inspired by raw, vintage images of NASA astronauts from Life Magazine. His intrigue grew, leading him to explore scientific documentaries, theoretical physics, and the early days of space exploration. With a background in graphic design, Justin has spent 15 years harnessing his skills.

As a child, he drew inspiration from movies and comics, encouraged by supportive parents who propelled him toward a career in art and design.
