About this artwork

Leslie Hunter, a painter from Scotland, is known as one of the four artists making up the Scottish Colourists. This group of Post-Impressionist painters has had a significant impact on modern Scottish art and culture. Hunter created several still-life works, like 'Pink Roses in a Chinese Blue and White Vase', that gained a lot of attention from forward-thinking critics and collectors, largely because of his unique approach to light.

About the artist

Born in 1877 on the Isle of Bute's Rothesay, George Leslie Hunter made his way to California with his family in 1892. By the end of the 19th century, he was earning his living in California as an illustrator. Many details about Hunter's early work remain unknown due to the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake that destroyed most of his work. Not long after, he relocated to Glasgow.

In the 1920s, Hunter, Cadell, Fergusson, and Peploe emerged as the 'Scottish Colourists', a group of artists known for their influence from the vibrant colour and relaxed brushwork of French Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and fauvist painting. Hunter painted an array of portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes, celebrated for their illumination and light effects. However, Hunter's mission was to reflect nature's essence through pure colour, rather than focusing on light.

His paintings, popular among progressive critics and collectors during his lifetime, have only increased in value since his 1931 death, making them among Scotland's most cherished.
