Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, Libby Smart relocated to Charlotte after completing her education in 1985. In 1993, she launched her own decorative painting venture, a successful endeavor she ran for twelve years before transitioning to fine art. Local artist Andy Braitman became her mentor for six years, shaping her studies in the field.

Libby also attended workshops by several esteemed artists nationwide, which helped to shape her distinctive painting style. Her signature brushwork and vibrant colour schemes are especially noteworthy. She sees herself as a colourist with a unique perspective of nature, capable of transforming the ordinary into something fascinating. This, she believes, piques the viewers' interest, immersing them into the painting.
