About this artwork

Margaret Meen, a native of Bungay, Suffolk, England, is the artist behind this high-quality print. It's a reproduction of an illustration she made of Passiflora maliformis back in 1789, using watercolor on vellum. Meen moved to London where she taught the art of flower painting and showcased her work at the Royal Academy from 1775 to 1785. She also compiled her work in a book published in 1790, titled 'Exotic plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew'.

About the artist

Born in Suffolk in December 1751, Margaret Meen became a remarkably talented amateur flower painter, spending most of her life in London to nurture her craft and teaching career. Despite uncertainty about the origins of her artwork, her affluent upbringing and brother Henry's society status likely provided her artistic education.

She contributed greatly to 18th and 19th-century British botanical history, skillfully illustrating exotic plants for Kew Gardens and launching the short-lived publication, "Exotic Plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew" in 1790. Notably, she taught Queen Charlotte and the Royal Princesses, and her masterpieces adorned the interiors of royal residences and scientific institutions. From 1775 to 1785, she was a memeber of and displated at the Royal Academy.
