About the artist

Pieter De Pannemaeker, who made his mark in the 1880s, was a respected watercolour artist and printmaker based in Ghent, Belgium. With a focus on landscapes and botanicals, he was a significant contributor to numerous publications and periodicals during a time when Belgium was at the forefront of botanical publishing. De Pannemaeker was instrumental in creating around 3,000 illustrations for various botanical books and periodicals.

His notable work includes the art and chromolithographs he created for Jean Jules Linden’s publications such as Lindenia and L’Illustration Horticole. Interestingly, most plants featured in "Flore des Serres" were also available for purchase in van Houtte's nursery, effectively making the journal a sales catalogue. De Pannemaeker's considerable contributions to botanical science and horticulture were recognised by the French government in 1886 when he was awarded the Croix de Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole.
