About this artwork

Back in 1874, Paul Cézanne showcased his work at the initial Impressionist exhibition. Seeing the work of other artists, Cézanne was driven to start painting in Plein air, which is essentially painting in the great outdoors. This push inspired Cézanne to surpass the Impressionist style, giving form and colour a whole new analytical approach. He often painted the quaint southern French town of L'Estaque. In his portrayal of this town, Cézanne employed vivid colors and diagonal brushwork, marking a significant shift in his style.

About the artist

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. His often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He was a master of still life, landscape and portraiture. Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the old masters, and his exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired the Cubists.
