About this artwork

'Sous-Bois' presents a unique take on the French countryside, unlike most of Paul Cézanne's other works. It focuses on a group of trees and branches with each leaf depicted as a dynamic brushstroke, offering detail levels you don't usually see in an Impressionist piece. That said, Cézanne still incorporates geometric shapes and horizontal lines, staying true to his need to maintain a structural element in his artwork.

About the artist

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. His often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He was a master of still life, landscape and portraiture. Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the old masters, and his exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired the Cubists.
