About this artwork

Paul Gauguin created his 'A Vase of Flowers' masterpiece during his second visit to Tahiti in 1895. The vase is filled to the brim with vibrant flowers such as hibiscus, white and yellow frangipani, and white tiare. It's noticeable that some of the flowers seem to be past their prime, with a few petals scattered on the table below. This hints that Gauguin was less focused on botanical specifics, and more intrigued by the decorative forms and colour interplay of the arrangement. This digital reproduction has been colour matched to the original artwork and received the stamp of approval from the National Gallery. Each purchase contributes to the museum's ongoing operations.

About the artist

Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903) was a French Post-Impressionist artist who was not only a painter, but also a sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and writer. He was an important figure in the Symbolist movement and his bold use of colour and synthetist style of painting influenced the development of modern art. He spent time in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, where he produced some of his most famous works. His personal life was often tumultuous, and he was married twice and had five children. He was also a mentor to the artist Émile Bernard.
