About this artwork

This excellent print is a watercolour replica of Tulipa cultivars from 'Verzameling van Bloemen naar de Natuur geteekend door' (Collection of flowers sketched from nature) by Pieter van Kouwenhoorn. This leather-bound album dating back to the 1630s holds 46 magnificent paintings. They were likely meant for publishing since many of the plant names were labeled in Latin, French, and German. Kouwenhoorn was a skilled glass artist who worked in Haarlem and Leiden in the Netherlands. Notably, he was one of the mentors to the well known painter Gerard Dou (1613-1675).

About the artist

Pieter van Kouwenhoorn (1599-1654)) was a well respected Dutch botanical illustrator. His work was not just limited to Haarlen, but also extended to Leiden. Kouwenhoorn was known for his mentoring role to painters, Gerard Dou and Hendrick Jansz. van der Smient.

His 'Collection of Flowers Drawn from Nature' (Verzameling van Bloemen naar de Natuur geteekend door), dating back to the 1620s-1630s, showcased 46 floral illustrations, labelled in Latin, German, and French. Besides botanical illustrations, Kouwenhoorn also painted landscapes, portraits, and mythological subjects. He died in Leiden in 1654
