About this artwork

This high-quality print comes from an original watercolor painting on paper of different Tulipa varieties like 'Duck', 'Lack', cultivar and sylvestris. The artwork comes from 'Verzameling van Bloemen naar de Natuur geteekend door', a collection of nature-inspired floral drawings by Pieter van Kouwenhoorn. Dated back to the 1630s, it's part of a leather-bound album housing 46 art pieces. These pieces were likely intended for publication, as they feature plant names in Latin, French, and German. Kouwenhoorn was a Netherlands-based glass artist who worked in Haarlem and Leiden, and he was also a master to the famous painter Gerard Dou (1613-1675).

About the artist

Pieter van Kouwenhoorn (1599-1654)) was a well respected Dutch botanical illustrator. His work was not just limited to Haarlen, but also extended to Leiden. Kouwenhoorn was known for his mentoring role to painters, Gerard Dou and Hendrick Jansz. van der Smient.

His 'Collection of Flowers Drawn from Nature' (Verzameling van Bloemen naar de Natuur geteekend door), dating back to the 1620s-1630s, showcased 46 floral illustrations, labelled in Latin, German, and French. Besides botanical illustrations, Kouwenhoorn also painted landscapes, portraits, and mythological subjects. He died in Leiden in 1654
