About this artwork

The artwork 'Roses' was created by Vincent Van Gogh during the final weeks of his stay at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum. Van Gogh had willingly admitted himself to the institution due to deteriorating mental and physical conditions. Throughout his time there, he created a series of still life paintings featuring flowers, often attributing symbolic meanings to each flora. Even though he didn't specify a particular symbolism for roses, he viewed all blooming plants as symbols of birth and renewal. His choice of flower and the harmonious use of colour indicate that Van Gogh was hopeful about his upcoming future.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
