About this artwork

Vincent Van Gogh created five large paintings of sunflowers in basic clay pots between the years 1888 and 1889. In correspondence with his brother, Theo, Van Gogh shared that sunflowers held a special meaning for him because he felt they expressed thankfulness. He displayed his initial two sunflower paintings in the extra room of his home in Arles. This space was later occupied by his mate and fellow painter, Paul Gauguin, who admired Van Gogh's arrangement and colour usage in his works.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
