About this artwork

This excellent print's origins can be traced back to a chromolithograph plate called 'Victoria regia (opening flower)'. Walter Hood Fitch, a well known artist and lithographer, is credited with its creation. It was initially published in a book titled 'Victoria regia: or, Illustrations of the Royal water-lily' back in 1851. William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) penned the descriptions that accompanied the visuals.

About the artist

Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892) was a botanical illustrator born in Glasgow. Fitch's talent for drawing was fostered from a young age, leading to an apprenticeship at a printed fabric mill by 13. His exceptional skills caught the eye of the mill owner, Henry Monteith, who introduced him to his friend, William Hooker, the Regis Professor of Botany at Glasgow University and editor of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine. Recognizing Fitch's talent, Hooker decided to take him on him as an illustrator, and soon grew to admire his aptitude for drawing and watercolour.

When Hooker became the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew in 1841, he invited Fitch along. Living in Hooker's home, Fitch became the Magazine's sole artist and provided the majority of illustrations for official Kew publications for the next 40 years. He illustrated over 2,700 plants for the Magazine and published more than 10,000 illustrations in all.

Despite his 25-year tenure at Kew, Fitch never held an official position. A pay dispute in 1877 ended his service, but his skills remained in demand. He continued his work as a botanical artist until 1888. His obituary praised him as an unrivalled botanical artist with a keen insight into nature.
