About this artwork

Edgar Degas was a French impressionist painter from the 19th century, famed for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. In 1873, Degas created a piece called ‘A Cotton Office in New Orleans’ that portrayed the inside of his maternal uncle Michel Musson's cotton business in New Orleans. It shows Musson and other family members involved in a mixture of work and leisure activities, with raw cotton laid out on the central table. There's a similarity between this painting and Degas's ballet rehearsal scenes. The men are loosely gathered in groups and some have taken on ballet-like poses, for example, the guy on the left leaning his arms on the window ledge.
