About this artwork

Vincent van Gogh, a well known Dutch Post-Impressionist artist, is known for his vast array of artworks, from vivid landscapes to intense self-portraits. His signature style was marked by daring colours and emotive brushstrokes. In 1888, while residing in the southern French city of Arles, Van Gogh created the masterpiece 'Starry Night Over the Rhone'. He painted this from the jetty on the river Rhone's east side. The perspective van Gogh selected let him depict the brilliant reflections of the gaslights across the sparkling blue river.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
