About this artwork

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, an English poet and painter, was instrumental in establishing the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This mid-19th-century collective of artists, critics, and writers aimed to portray traditional themes like religion in intricate compositions with a high degree of realism. In 1865, Rossetti created a pencil sketch featuring Jane Morris, who was not only the spouse of textile designer William Morris but also Rossetti's muse and romantic partner. The side profile in the sketch emphasises her striking features and untamed black hair.
