About this artwork

John William Waterhouse hailed from England and was a recognised painter who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This was a collective of artists, poets, and critics from the mid-1800s who were known for their focus on traditional themes like religion, using refined composition and utmost realism. One of his paintings showcases Miranda, a key character from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. She, along with her father, was exiled to an island. In the painting, Miranda is seen gazing out into the sea, her vibrant red hair cascading around her face, perfectly embodying the turmoil of the scene she is observing.
