About this artwork

This artwork is one of three self-portraits Rembrandt created right before his death in 1669. He painted these pieces to play around with lighting techniques and to attract rich patrons. In this particular piece, Rembrandt focuses on depicting textures and hues, drawing the eye to his aging visage. Many artists and writers believe this was Rembrandt's way of grappling with his impending mortality. This reproduction is color-matched to the original and has been given the seal of approval by the National Gallery. Every purchase contributes to the museum's work.
