About this artwork

The iconic masterpiece 'Bacchus and Ariadne' by Titian, a well known artist from the Renaissance period, had a significant impact on European art and it's one of the crown jewels housed at the National Gallery. It paints a vivid picture of a tale spun by ancient writers Ovid and Catallus, focused on Ariadne, a princess from Crete who was left stranded on the Greek island of Naxos. Bacchus, the god of wine, is instantly smitten with her and rushes out of his chariot to meet her. The Duke of Ferrara famously commissioned Titian to create 'Bacchus and Ariadne' as a centerpiece for his 'Alabaster Room' in the Ducal Palace. Other pieces were commissioned from artists Giovanni Bellini and Dosso Dossi, each one painting a scene of indulgent bacchanals. This print, approved by the National Gallery, perfectly matches the original painting's colors. Every purchase of this print aids in supporting the museum's operations.
