About this artwork

The artwork portrays a woman turned towards the left as she plays a keyboard instrument, which is called a virginal. There's a landscape painted inside the virginal, and the piece of art hung on the wall behind her is believed to either be the original or a duplicate of 'The Procuress' by Dirck van Baburen. This artwork is among a number of pieces by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer that showcase keyboard instruments. This print is colour-matched to the original and has been validated by the National Gallery. Every piece sold contributes to the museum's operations.

About the artist

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who is known for his masterful use of light and colour. He was a member of the Delft School, a group of Dutch Golden Age painters who were active in the city of Delft. Vermeer's works are known for their realism and attention to detail, and his use of light and colour has been widely admired. He was also known for his use of symbolism and allegory in his works. Vermeer's personal life is largely unknown, but it is believed that he had a large family and was a successful art dealer.
