About this artwork

The 'Samson and Delilah' artwork by Peter Paul Rubens was a piece specifically requested by his buddy Nicolaas II Rockox, who was the mayor of Antwerp and wanted it for his personal collection. The painting captures the dramatic moment when Delilah discovers her boyfriend Samson's supernatural abilities and plots to cut his hair, making him defenseless. Rubens was inspired by the famous Renaissance artist Caravaggio's unique use of light and rich, vibrant colours during a visit to Italy. He then implemented these techniques in his own painting of 'Samson and Delilah'. This print has been expertly colour-matched to the original painting and has gotten the thumbs up from the National Gallery. Your purchase will help support the museum's ongoing work.

Express service for unframed print and posters by Royal Mail Special Delivery to arrive the next working day for an additional cost. Framed prints are always shipped by express courier.

UK - £6.90 for unframed items by Royal Mail Special Delivery
UK - £8.95 for framed items.

International - Shipping is calculated before you check out according to destination.
International - Unframed by Registered AirMail or by premium express courier (select at checkout).
Very large prints are always sent by express service.

About the artist

Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish Baroque painter, draughtsman and diplomat. He is considered one of the most influential artists of the 17th century, and his works are well known for their dynamic composition, colour and movement. Rubens was a highly successful court painter and diplomat, and was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England. He was also a prolific artist, producing over 2000 works in his lifetime. His style was heavily influenced by classical art, and he was a master of the use of oil paint. Rubens was also a highly successful art collector, and his collection of Italian Renaissance art was one of the largest in Europe.
