About this artwork

Sir Peter Paul Rubens created the artwork 'Minerva protects Pax and Mars' as a gift for King Charles I of England. Rubens was acting as Philip IV of Spain's envoy in 1603 when he presented this piece to the king. At the time, England and Spain had a five-year-long war history and both nations were eager for peace. The artwork is an allegory, telling a straightforward moral tale - Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, is guarding Pax (Peace) and Ceres (Earth's goddess) from Mars (the war god). This print matches the original painting's colours and is sanctioned by the National Gallery. Each purchase contributes to the museum's operations.
