About this artwork

Paul Cézanne's father was the owner of Jas de Bouffan, a property just outside of Aix-en-Provence. From 1866 to 1899, before the property was sold, Cézanne loved to paint various scenes of the house and its surroundings. The estate was dear to him as it was a haven where he could work in peace. This painting showcases his preferred technique in the 1880s - using small parallel brushstrokes. The method produces a glittering visual effect which perfectly complements this painting. It's almost as if you can hear the leaves of the trees rustling in the wind.The colour of this print mirrors the original and gets a thumbs up from the Courtauld Gallery. Buying this piece also contributes to the Courtauld's work.

About the artist

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. His often repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields. He was a master of still life, landscape and portraiture. Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. He was heavily influenced by the old masters, and his exploration of geometric simplification and optical phenomena inspired the Cubists.
