About this artwork

While residing in Paris, Vincent Van Gogh created a number of still life pieces featuring a pair of shoes. One of his friends mentioned that Van Gogh actually picked up those shoes from a nearby flea market and marched them through the dirt until they got pretty grubby. It was at that point that he thought they were intriguing enough to paint. Interestingly, Van Gogh painted this image on top of another one, which was a perspective from his brother Theo's flat. He frequently reused canvases multiple times as a way to cut costs, as he grappled with financial struggles throughout his artistic journey.

About the artist

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold colour, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His style was heavily influenced by Impressionism, Symbolism and Japanese woodblock prints. He was a prolific artist, producing more than 2,000 artworks in his lifetime, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. His personal life was marked by mental illness and poverty.
